Stormwater Management: Protecting Our Local Waterways
In Northeast Pennsylvania, stormwater runoff is a significant concern for our communities. When rain or snowmelt flows over driveways, parking lots, and lawns, it collects pollutants such as oil, fertilizers, sediment, and litter.
Unlike the water in our indoor drains, stormwater is not treated. It flows directly into our local inlets and eventually discharges into our streams, such as the Susquehanna River or its many tributaries.
Why It Matters
As part of the MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) program, our township is committed to reducing the amount of pollution entering our waterways. Clean water is essential for:
- Public Safety: Reducing localized flooding and ice patches on roadways.
- Health: Protecting the groundwater that many of us rely on for drinking.
- Environment: Maintaining the health of local fish and wildlife habitats.
How You Can Help
Residents play a vital role in keeping our water clean. Small changes can make a big impact:
- Keep Inlets Clear: Ensure that leaves, grass clippings, and trash do not block storm drains.
- Proper Disposal: Never pour chemicals, motor oil, or paint down a storm drain.
- Smart Landscaping: Use fertilizers sparingly and consider native plants or rain gardens to help water soak into the ground naturally.
By working together to manage stormwater, we ensure a cleaner, safer environment for all residents of our township.
